At the end of the chapter 1, Nick describes Gatsby:
The silhouette of a moving cat wavered across the moonlight, and turning my head to watch it, I saw that I was not alone — fifty feet away a figure had emerged from the shadow of my neighbor’s mansion and was standing with his hands in his pockets regarding the silver pepper of the stars. Something in his leisurely movements and the secure position of his feet upon the lawn suggested that it was Mr. Gatsby himself, come out to determine what share was his of our local heavens. I decided to call to him. Miss Baker had mentioned him at dinner, and that would do for an introduction. But I didn’t call to him, for he gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone — he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward — and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness.
What do you think he's thinking about? Feel free to speculate, whether you know the rest of the story or not, and write an internal dialogue showing what his thoughts are at this moment in time.

When Nick sees Mr. Gatsby for the first time, he strikes Nick as a mysterious man who wants to be alone with his thoughts. While alone, Mr. Gatsby is staring at a green light across the water. In my opinion, I think Mr. Gatsby is just wondering what the light could. Through the whole story, he thinks of the light as a mystery (just like how nick thought Mr. Gatsby was mysterious). My thoughts about what Mr. Gatsby could be thinking is what the light could possibly be. He could think it’s a light from a buoy, or a light from a building. However, Mr. Gatsby wants to keep it a mystery because if he found out what it is, how could there be any more wonder When Nick sees Mr. Gatsby for the first time, he strikes nick as a mysterious man who rather be alone for him.

Why does Mr. Gatsby stare out in the distance all lonely like? Mr. Gatsby is staring out at the green light in the distance reminiscing about the past. This green light is Daisy’s and Tom’s dock from across the lake. Gatsby and Daisy had a thing long ago and broke up. Gatsby seems to not have gotten over that love affair and stares out at the green light reminding him of Daisy. An internal dialogue he may be having with himself is “Is Daisy happy”, “Does she remember me?” and “I miss her.”

Nick arrives home, he sees Gatsby for the first time, a handsome young man standing on the lawn with his arms reaching out toward the dark water. Nick looks out at the water, but all he can see is a distant green light that might mark the end of a dock.He is a skinny but handsome man.It kind of sounds like nick wants to have a conversation with Gatsby but he doesn't know what to say. Gatsby seems like such a mysterious man to him it sounds like at that moment in time just standing there by himself alone not communicating with anyone else just standing there. He could be jealous of Gatsby's house and his money. He could also be thinking I wish i had all of his money i wonder what he even did to obtain all this wealth. its not fair I have worked hard all my life and all i have to show for it is this little house i live in between two mansions. maybe i can break into his house one night and take some of his money he probably has so much of it he wont even notice any of it missing at all. whenever i get the guts ill go for it.

Gatsby represents everything Nick scorns about New York. Gatsby clearly poses a challenge to Nick’s customary ways of thinking about the world, and Nick’s struggle to come to terms with that.

I think he is thinking about somebody important. He seems lost and seeks guidance in the green glowing light on the other side of the bay. Gatsby's internal dialogue would go something like this, All I see is darkness around my house. Sounds of animals are all around me, singing in unison. The wind blows the smell of salt from the bay into my nostrils. I leisurely stroll around my house and towards my dock. As I look out to the green light, I feel as though something is watching over me. Reaching out toward the light, my hands tremble. Just like a boat moving toward a lighthouse, I need to follow the light to reach what I truly want most in life. I know in my heart, money can't buy what I am searching for. The thought of that makes me shiver. I will return to my home and be alone for the rest of the night. Maybe one day, I will go to that light and find what I am searching for.

Nick looks out at the water, but all he can see is a far away green light that may mark the end of a dock. Gatsby is yearning for something on the other side of the bay. I've seen the movie so I know that he is yearning for Daisy the woman he loves that lives on the other side of the bay in East egg and she is married to Tom. Gatsby is sad that the love of his life has been married and he cannot be with her. Though Nick does not yet know the green light’s origin, nor what it represents for Gatsby, the inner yearning is seen Gatsby’s posture and his emotional stance. Gatsby is a mysterious figure for Nick, since Nick does not know his motives, or how he got so rich, his history or where he came from, and he is unaware of the object that he is yearning for while he is reaching out for the green light.

Cameron, just as a note, the figure reaching for the green light is Gatsby, not Nick. But I like the ideas that you've come up with about what you think Nick is thinking.
Cameron-Ty, I love your internal dialogue. Very poetic!
